What is mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. Asbestos was used in the 50’s through the 80’s mainly for insulation purposes. Litigation regarding asbestos began primarily in the early 80’s when the link was made between asbestos exposure and mesothelioma. Asbestos exposure refers to those people who were around asbestos and as such inhaled the fibers that are airborne.
The asbestos fibers are inhaled into the person’s lungs causing restrictive lung capacity and shortness of breath. The physical manifestations of asbestos exposure may not surface or become evident for decades. Exposure to asbestos leads to asbestosis which can evolve into mesothelioma or “meso”. Meso is often times a fatal disease. The treatment for meso is limited.
What can be done legally about mesothelioma?
Once the link was made between asbestos exposure and mesothelioma in the 70’s and 80’s massive litigation was initiated by law firms across the country. The number of defendants in these cases would include manufactures of the asbestos, employers, building owners and management companies, distribution companies, companies that manufacture asbestos related products and companies that used asbestos in its products such as Safety Kleen and many others. Manufactures of asbestos include but are not limited to these companies.
The exposure to asbestos has occurred across the United States and in every state. A list of some of the work sites where exposure to asbestos has occurred can be found here.
Mesothelioma and Pleural symptoms
The symptoms of mesothelioma include but are not limited to shortness of breath, wheezing, a cough that won’t go away, bone pain, dizziness, loss of orientation, fever of unknown origin and development of masses. There are two types of mesothelioma. The first type is Peritoneal which refers to mesothelioma of the lining of the stomach. Some of the symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include nausea, weight loss, and general stomach pain.
There is a second type of mesothelioma called Pleural. Pleural refers to mesothelioma of the lining of the lungs. The symptoms of pleural meso include shortness of breath, cough, fever, and general tiredness.
Products containing asbestos
There are many different products that contain asbestos. Any exposure to these products which contain asbestos increases the likelihood of asbestosis and mesothelioma.
